A Heart Shaping
Carl Newlen

- New Poems | December 18, 2011, 5:49 am

I will show you how to breathe.
It will feel like God,
your breath on my face,
my hand in your hair, asking
you why you tremble.

I will show you how to love
me for a lifetime of years,
how to look into my eyes
and still kiss me
like this.

I will show you how to teach
me about your fingertips
and lips, how to trace
your body breathing
under mine.

I will show you how to watch
a heart shaping
from pieces

Eat Your Spaghetti
Carl Newlen
Bayley Rainer Picky eater

- Raising Children | January 29, 2010, 3:27 pm

Me: Bayley, you need to start eating your spaghetti.
Bayley age 5: I`m not hungry.
Me: Do you want some cake?
Bayley: Yes!
Me: So you are hungry, now eat.
Bayley: Can I have some cake?
Me: When you are done eating your spaghetti.

(3 minutes later)
Me: Bayley, you promised me you would start trying new foods. You can`t just eat chicken nuggets and fries all the time. So you better eat.

(1 minute later)

Me: Bayley, come on. Just take a bite. If you don`t like it you can spit it out.
Bayley: I don`t like it.
Me: You never tried it. You used to love spaghetti when you were little. And I even let you pick out the spaghetti at the store.

(1 minute later)

Me: Look, Bayley, Tristen is eating his dinner. Just try it . . . Okay, I didn`t want to tell you this. (whispered) If you don`t eat at least a little bite I am going to have to take you to the hospital. They are going to have to give you three shots. You will get one in the middle of your eye, one in the ear and one in your belly. Do you really want to do that?

(pause)

Me: Where do you think you are going?
Bayley: I am going to get my shoes.

I Buried My Wife
Carl Newlen

- New Poems | January 29, 2010, 3:23 pm

I buried my wife in the sky
so the Great Blue Herons can comb
and wash her every morning, pull
the blanket to her chin
at night.

I buried my wife in the middle
of a worried day not remembered
by my words or a last sound rising,
beside the quiet secret of a rose
closed with rain.

I buried my wife in my heart,
my sleepless one, my darling
now closer to our children
farther still from anything
bright.
