Dragon Song

- July 10, 2009, 3:35 pm | Dragon Song

On this enormous day
open to wild possibilities,
I bare my heart cleanly.

Here, at this place where everything
seems clear, where need refers
only to water, what I want is the wisdom
that comes from being unable to touch
what one loves.

I am away from the place
where beauty comes,
and the sunflowers here
remind me of you,
and there is nothing I can do.

By blood I am wholly animal,
and with a thirst for living
I am driven by great desire.
I know no more about this lesson
of separation than the eaglet,
newly hatched,
knows extinction.

Somewhere between my need
to touch, and this distance
that prevents me,
the dragon sits alone,
playing a bleached bone flute,
near a black tongue of river,
and the echoes sound like laughter.
